- This article is about a position within the legal system. For other uses of the word see 검사.
검사 (檢事) -- a public prosecutor.
검사 may refer to the prosecution in general, or a specific prosecutor in a court case. It will often be translated as public prosecutor in English but it could just as easily be called the prosecuting attorney, the district attorney, or the counsel for the Crown. It is important to note that in Korea a 검사 would never be referred to as a 변호사, or lawyer. These are two very distinct positions in the Korean legal system.
Other useful terms include:
- 검사장 a chief public prosecutor
- 검사 직무 대리 a probational prosecutor
- 특별 검사 an independent special prosecutor
[edit] Examples
- 우리 아버지가 검사입니다 My Dad is a prosecutor.
- 김철수가 검사로 있다 Kim Chul-su is acting as prosecution.
- 정부가 특별 검사를 임명했다. The government appointed an independent special prosecutor.
