The use of 돌 can be divided into five different categories. It can refer to earth that has hardened into masses larger than sand but smaller than boulders.

• 돌 꼭대기에 올려놓아도 굶어 죽지 않는다 Even if you put a rock on a mountaintop, it never starves to death.
• 돌 뚫는 화살은 없어도 돌 파는 락수는 있다 Raindrops, not arrows, can pierce stone.
• 돌 지고 방아 찧는다 When you're milling rice, you're being defeated by stone.
• 돌도 십 년을 보고 있으면 구멍이 뚫린다 Stare at a rock for ten years and you'll bore a hole.
• 돌로 치면 돌로 치고 떡으로 치면 떡으로 친다 Thrown stones will be repaid with stones, rice cakes will be repaid with rice cakes. (You reap what you sow, what goes around comes around)
• 돌을 들면 얼굴이 붉어진다 If you lift a rock, your face will go red.
• 돌을 들어 제 발등을 깬다 Lifting a rock can leave your foot broken.
• 돌을 차면 발부리만 아프다 If you kick a rock, the only one hurting will be your tiptoes.
• 구르는 돌에 이끼가 안 낀다 A rolling stone gathers no moss.
