- This article is about a unit of volume. For other meanings of the word, see 섬.
섬 -- a straw sac; a unit of volume.
A 섬 is a sac made of straw used to carry ice or other grains.
- 쌀 섬 a rice bag
- 섬거적 a straw mat
- 보리를 섬에 가득 담다 to fill a sac with barley full to the top
It can also be a unit of volume to measure grains, powders, or liquids. One seom is equal to 180 metric liters or 5.12 U.S. bushels. Likewise, one seom is the same as ten mals (말, 18 liters).
- 섬지기 a rice-field requiring a seom of seed
As a measure of volume, a seom is also a counting word and is counted with pure-Korean cardinal numbers, including 석 and 넉.
- 쌀 한 섬 one seom of rice
- 보리 두 섬 two seoms of barley
- 쌀 석 섬 three seoms of rice
- 보리 넉 섬 fourseoms of barley
