As one of the basic direction prepositions, 위 is an extensively employed pure-Korean word. The opposite of this word is 아래 or . Its use can be neatly categorized into four areas.

At its most basic, 위 is primarily used to refer to a place above another place. Its Sino-Korean equivalent is 상부.

  • 에 above, over, across
  • 의 upper
  • 구름 above the cloud(s)
  • 하늘 에 up in the sky
  • 1미터 one meter above (something)


In this context, you will also see it used about pieces of writing.

  • the above text, passage, article
  • 윗글따르면 according to the (above) text
  • 윗글의하면 according to the (above) text

위 can also refer the peak of some tall object, like a building. On a mountain, we would be referring to the summit, or 꼭대기. In the case of a person, we would be speaking about the head.

  • 에서 아래까지 from top to bottom

  • 라디오 에 on (top of) the radio
  • 책장 에 on (top of) the book case
  • 페이지 at the top of a page
  • 에서 둘째 the second from the top
  • 에서 셋째 the third from the top
  • 에서 넷째 the fourth from the top
  • 에서 다섯째 the fifth from the top

It is used to indicate the surface (표면) of an object. So in this case it could best be thought of the English preposition, "on."

  • 접시 위에 on the plate
  • 책상 에 on the desk
  • 바닥 에 on the floor
  • 에 on the mattress (sleeping mat)
  • 방석 위에 on a cushion
  • 에 on the fire
  • 위에 on the ground
  • 잔디 위에 on the lawn
  • 모래 위에 on the sand
  • 에 on the water
  • 호수 에 on the lake
  • 파도 위에 on the wave(s)
  • 바다 에 on the surface of the sea
  • 수평선 에 on the horizon
  • 에 on (in) the snow
  • 서다 to stand (on something or somwehere)
  • 지치다 to slide (skate) on the snow

위 may also mean superiority over another person's social position, rank, or age.

  • 의 higher, superior, older
  • 학년 to be one year ahead in school
  • 지위 higher in rank
  • one number higher
  • to be one level higher; to be a cut above
