이루다 -- to accomplish, realize; or form.
This pure-Korean verb can also take on several other meanings: to achieve, attain, effect, complete, finish, fulfill, carry out. It may also mean to make, or to constitute.
The use of 이루다 can be divided into three situations. It is used when someone or something has fallen into a certain state or brought about some result:
- 잠 못 이루는 밤 a sleepless night
- 문전성시를 이루다 to be plagued with visitors
It is also used when something has been achieved according to plan:
- 조화를 이루다 to attain harmony
- 소망을 이루다 to realize your desire
- 목적을 이루다 to achieve a purpose
- 부를 이루다 to make a fortune
Lastly, it is used to indicate that something has been formed from a number of different elements or parts:
- 사회를 이루다 to constitute a society
- 본질을 이루다 to constitute the essence (of something)
- 주성분을 이루다 to make up the main components (of something)
- 훌륭한 자연항을 이루다 to form a good natural harbor
- 만을 이루다 to form a gulf (or bay)
