This proverb reminds women that once they get married, they need to stick it out to the end. Even if living under a horrid mother-in-law is unbearable, as it frequently was in olden times, you can't give up on your marriage. Death, is no excuse either. It is best to stick around and haunt your in-laws' household, just to show your dedication.
