1. 천 (千) -- a thousand.
This is a Sino-Korean word with no equivalent pure-Korean word. It is preceded by 구백구십구 and followed by 천일. When counting by hundreds it is preceded by 구백 and followed by 천백. Like in English it is used to count by thousands.
- 일천 one thousand
- 이천 two thousand
- 삼천 three thousand
- 사천 four thousand
- 오천 five thousand
- 육천 six thousand
- 칠천 seven thousand
- 팔천 eight thousand
- 구천 nine thousand
However, unlike in English, it is not used to count by tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands. The next highest number after 구천 when counting by thousands is 만.
Usage:
- 수천의 thousands of (people)
- 천 배의 thousandfold; a thousand times
- 2천의 학생 two thousand students
- 천분의 1 a thousandth
- 천에 하나 one in a thousand
