The Academy of Korean Studies (한국학중앙연구원, 韓國學中央硏究員) is a private foundation established to carry out basic research into Korean culture and history. The Academy translates and publishes Korean literary classics as well as maintains relationships with scholars of Korea around the world. To date, the Academy of Korean Studies has published over 1000 books and other works of scholarly value. It also holds a number of academic conferences every year. The Academy of Korean Studies is located in the Seongnam district of Bundang, in Unjung-dong.

The Academy of Korean Studies was founded by the government on June 30, 1978. In an effort to further advance the development of scholars in Korean culture, The Graduate School of Korean Studies was established at the Academy in March 1980. In 1992, the Academy published a 28 volume Encyclopedia of Korean Culture (한국민족문화대백과사전), covering some 5,000 years of Korean popular culture, and is now available on CD-ROM. The Academy has been working in collaboration since 1996 with the Korean Studies Information Center to increase the amount of digital resources available in this field.

[edit] Jangseogak Library
Jangseogak Library is the Academy's main collection of works on Korean studies and plays an important role in the study of the humanities and the social sciences. Jangseogak (장서각, 藏書閣) refers to the name of the royal library during the Joseon dynasty. In addition to the works of modern scholars, the library holds many ancient documents, seven of which have been named national treasures by the government. Jangseogak Library is open to the public on weekdays from 9:00am to 6:00pm.

The Academy of Korean Studies is located about 5 kilometers from the Pangyo Interchange, on the route to Anyang. Public transportation options are limited in this area, so it is often best to go by taxi from Seohyeon or Sunae Station. The 303 bus, however, does go by the front gate of the Academy.
