Baek-do is an archipelago 28 kilometers south of Geomun-do in Yeosu city, Jeollanam-do. The islands are uninhabited but are home to dozens of bird and tree species, as well as a number of subtropical trees like magnolia and camellia. Landing on the islets is prohibited as their ecosystem is under protection, but visitors to Geomun-do can take a ferry tour around Baek-do.
One source speculates on the archipelago's name: "the islands were called Baekdo because they numbered at about one hundred ('Baek'). But a closer count turned out to be 99, so they subtracted one ('一') from the Chinese character that means one hundred ('百'), which left them with '白,' which is also pronounced 'Baek'" [1].
