[edit] Public Baths 대중목욕탕

Koreans enjoy going to public baths to relax their fatigued bodies and for their health. For this reason there are always one or two public baths in the smallest neighborhood, even on the outskirts of the cities.

Public bathhouses can be commonly seen as Mogyoktangs, Saunas, or lavish Jjimjilbangs.

[edit] Hot Springs 온천장

Hot springs originate deep in the earth, where it is so hot that the water rises to form a spring. There are elements in the water beneficial to your health such as minerals and sulfur. Korea has many famous hot springs. Most of them are located in the provinces of Chungcheongbuk-do, Chungcheongnam-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Gyeongsangnam-do. Famous hot spring saunas include Dogo, Bugok, Osaek, Onyang, Suanbo, and Haeundae.

[edit] Barber Shops and Beauty Parlors 이발소와 미장원

Barber shops, where men go to have their hair cut, are called ibalso (이발소) or iyongwon (이용원). Beauty parlors, called mijangwon (미장원) in Korean, are places that both cut women's hair and offer other services for the beauty of the face and fingernails. These days, it is becoming more common for young men to go to mijangwon (beauty parlors) instead of ibalso (barber shops).

Besides cutting hair, here one may also receive a shave or massage. The cost of having your hair cut at a barber shop will vary between shops and between the country and the city, but usually having your hair cut, being shaved, and having your hair dried will cost around 12,000won. You will have to pay more if you receive a massage.

[edit] Beauty Parlors 미장원

These will have signs that may say "beauty salon" or "hair salon" in English or, besides mijangwon, they may also say meoribang (머리방) in Korean. Because people go here to perm their hair, you may have to wait for a long time. You can save time by calling or making reservations. Since your hair style has to fit your physical characteristics, at beauty parlors you may specify a specific stylist that you would like to do your hair. The cost differs significantly according to the environment, how well the establishment is known, and the services provided. A simple haircut will be somewhere around 10,000won, and a perm will cost around 30,000won.
