Bowling Alley

The"Bowling Alley" was a battlefield in the Korean War, located in Gasan-myeon, Chilgok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The North Korean army mounted an offensive in this area starting on August 10, 1950 pushing back ROK forces, and, on August 18th they broke through and entered the old walled village of Gasan. This was in a straight north-south-running valley about 5 kilometers long. The UN forces used star flares to illuminate the battle site, accompanied by a heavy cover of artillery fire. The North Korean Peoples Army threw their share of men and ammo into the battle, but by the 20th of August they were pushed back. Gen. Walton Walker inspected the site on the 20th and considered that Daegu had been saved through this battle.

It was called the Bowling Alley because of the noise and amount of ammo going up and down this straight lane between the mountains.

Currently, Highways 5 and 25 run through this valley, bifurcating partway through. Highway 25 goes off to the northwest where the stream turns that way, and Highway 5 goes to the northeast. Also, the No. 55 Expressway runs the length of the "Bowling Alley," disappearing into a tunnel at the north end. The south end of the valley is about ten kilometers from the Daegu city limits.
