Buan (부안군, , aid.peace.county) is a county in Jeollabuk-do. The population as of 2004 was 66,992, including:

  • 66,766 Koreans and
  • 226 non-Koreans.

To the east of the county is the city of Jeongeup, to the north is the city of Gimji, to the south is the county of Gochang, and to the west is the Yellow Sea. The length from east to west is 78.8㎢, and from north to south is 25.2㎢.

There are a number of islands in the county to the southwest, such as Wi-do (위도, 蝟島), Shik-do (식도, 食島), Jeonggeum-do (정금도, 井金島), Dallu-do (달루도, 達樓島), Daewaechi-do (대외치도, 大外雉島), Sowaechi-do (소외치도, 小外雉島), and others.

The average yearly temperature is 12∼13℃ with the highest recorded temperature being 35.3℃ and the lowest -14.2℃. The yearly precipitation is around 1,100mm, but the 450 mm it receives in July and August is 100 mm less than the eastern mountainous regions of Jeollabuk-do. On the other hand it receives more precipitation in the winter for being in the centre of the Byeonsan Peninsula (변산반도).

The total number of islands is 24, out of which 7 are inhabited and 17 are uninhabited.
