Buk-gu is one of 5 gu in Gwangju. As of 2004, it had a population of 457,655 (not including 1,345 foreigners) [1].
Despite the large population, Buk-gu has a substantial amount of parks and green spaces. The large Mudeungsan Provincial Park is partially in Buk-gu, as it sprawls into 3 sections of Gwangju. Wolchi Park features a zoo and botanical garden, and Jungoe Park is the site of the acclaimed art festival, Gwangju Biennale.
There are two notable museums in the area: Gwangju National Museum and Gwangju Folk Museum. Also, Gwangju Family Land---with rides, sledding areas, a swimming pool, a skating rink, and picnic area---is in the northern area of Buk-gu.
