Bulgapsa is a Buddhist temple in Yeonggwang county, Jeollanam-do. It lies on Bulgapsan (불갑산), Mt. Bulgap, at a height of 515 meters, and has been rebuilt several times in past centuries. There are hiking trails throughout the neighboring mountains, and the site itself is famous for its scenery, including the Chamsik Tree (잠식나무, Neolitsea sericea), which is designated as Natural Monument no. 112[1].

[edit] Bulgapsadaeungjeon

Bulgapsa holds Tangible Cultural Property no. 830, Bulgapsadaeungjeon (Daeungjeon Hall of Bulgapsa Temple). According to one source:

"The temple's Daeungjeon, presumed to have been built prior to the 18th century, is believed to have been repaired during the reign of King Yeongjo of Joseon, considering a recovered roof tile bearing the Chinese characters for 29th year of Geonnyung, which is equivalent to the 40th year of King Yeongjo (1764).

The hall was repaired again in the third year of King Seonjo (1909). This 3 room wide and 3 room deep building with multi-cluster brackets has a hipped and gabled roof, on the top of which are small images in the shape of a stone pagoda and a linden.

Dragon heads are carved on the upper part of the two columns in the center section.

The door in the center is decorated with elaborately carved chrysanthemum and lotus flower designs.

Inside the hall corner brackets are sculptured with dragon heads and the ceiling is latticed.

This Buddha hall, decorated with beautiful patterns and sculptures, well retains the method and style of the late Joseon wooden structure" [2].
