Category talk:Restaurants

Can we do something about all the "R"s? When we have restaurants everywhere and they are all indexed under "R" it's gonna be hard to find things. Also, why are some "Restaurants in XXX" under Subcategories and others under "Articles in Category" I am feeling very obtuse about the whole category thing. The "Help" doesn't. I'd like to change it to "Timbuktu Restaurants" rather than "Restaurants in Timbuktu" and have them all under one place. And, since Seoul is gonna be a huge part of it - Have the Seoul neighborhood locations as subcategories under Seoul (or Seoul/Kyeonggi-do). Can someone either tell me how do do these things, or do them (preferably the former). Unless anyone else has any other thoughts on the subject..... --Skookum 12:03, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

I don't see anything wrong with changing the categories if all the r's happen to be confusing. It would require changing the category of every page though, maybe about 30 minutes to an hour of work in total though it wouldn't have to be done all in one go. Categories work like this: you write something like this: [[Category:Sheep]] at the bottom of a page and the page will automatically be put into a category of that name that you don't have to bother creating. Afterwards since sheep is a sub-category of something else you would click on sheep and write in [[Category:Animals]]. After a while you will get to a major category where you stop because there's nowhere else to go (in this wiki those would be really general categories like Korea, History, Korean language and so on, categories that would be listed on the front page. If you want to write a little bit about the category you can do that on the category page but that would be about the category itself and not the pages that happen to be contained there, so if the category is Restaurants you might write on the top This category is for large chains that are not limited to one location in Korea. For smaller restaurants or individual categories use the sub-categories divided by location or something like that to explain what should be contained in it.

If we're dividing up Seoul should we divide up other large cities as well? mithridates aka 데이빛 12:48, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

I understand the part about hierarchies. But, how do you delete a Category. Or change the title of one. And why does "Mungyeong Restaurants" appear under a different listing than "Jongno Restaurants" or "Daegu Restaurants." The coding in both cases says "Categories: Restaurants."

Another thing is: it often doesn't seem easy to to go to the next more general level in the hierarchy. If you've come from there you can use the back button. But, say, you've come from "Restaurants" to "Mungyeong Restaurants" and so then you want to go to "Mungyeong". Some entries don't have any easy way to do this. I added a "Go to Mungyeong in the bottom of the "Mungyeong Restaurants" page. Shouldn't we have something like this on all entries. I tried to insert a [[Category:Mungyeong]] in that page but it leads to a brand-new page. I notice the Gyeongsangdo train station link goes to Categories:Provinces and from there you can click on Gyeongsando, but I don't see a direct link.

And re: dividing up cities - yes, probably Daegu and Pusan and perhaps others if we get real diligence in this wiki over time. It should be done whenever there is more than a handful of types of entries represented for a location. So far only Seoul has enough restaurants to merit being subcategorized.

You can change the title of a page by using the move button on the top which will create an automatic redirect, so do that instead of copying content over and deleting the other page. To go from Mungyeong restaurants to Mungyeong you can just add a sentence in the introduction like I've done with the square brackets around it to make it a link. If you write [[:Category:Gyeongsangbuk-do]] by the way it will show up on the page itself, whereas if you leave out the colon and just write [[Category:Gyeongsangbuk-do]] it will simply assign the page to the category. mithridates aka 데이빛 15:32, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
