Founded at the end of the 1994 season following the demise of Chonbuk Buffalo, Chonbuk Hyundai Motors joined the K-League in 1995 at the same time as Jeolla province rivals Chunnam Dragons, playing their home matches in Jeonju.

Cheonbuk lifted the Korean FA Cup in 2000 and became the first side to win the trophy a second time with their 2003 victory. They would win the trophy again in 2005.
