Cheongju (청주시, 淸州市; clean.province.city) is the capital of Chungcheongbuk-do. The population as of 2004 was 626,614, including:
- 624,288 Koreans and
- 2,326 non-Koreans.
The population is 50.2% female and 49.8% male.

To the west of the city is the county of Goesan, to the south are the counties of Yeongdong and Boeun, and to the north is the county of Jincheon.
To the east of the city is a mountain range called the Noryeong Mountains (노령산맥_, including the mountain of Jwagusan (좌구산, 座龜山:667m).
Cheongju has a clear distinction between its four seasons, and there is a large difference between high and low temperatures. The average yearly temperature is 11.6℃, the average in January is 0.4℃, the average in August is 25.2℃ and the yearly average precipitation is 1,216mm.

Cheongju became the capital of the province is 1908 after it was moved from Chungju.

[edit] Cultural properties
- Sangdangsanseong (상당산성, Sangdang Mountain Fortress) lies on the slopes of Uamsan within the city limits. The fortress is comprised mainly of a 3-4 metre tall wall that stretches over 4.2 kilometers in circumference. The present walls date to the 1716 restoration of the site. Within the walls lies a small tourist village that has several restaurants.
- Cheongju National Museum also lies near Uamsan, and houses several exhibits of cultural artifacts from the nearby area.
- Heungdeok Temple Site is the home to the Early Printing Museum, and is purported to be the site of the printing of Jikji, the oldest extant book printed using movable metal type. The museum itself contains exhibits related to the art of printing through the ages.
- Yongdusaji Cheoldanggan (용두사지 청당간, The Iron Flagpole of the Yongdu Temple Site) is designated Korean National Treasure number 41, and is located near Cheongju Department Store in downtown Cheongju. Made of twenty iron cylinders, the flagpole stands 13.1 metres tall, and was formerly used to hang flags to honor the Buddha.
