China is a country located East Asia. Its capital is Beijing. It has traditionally been known as the middle kingdom because of its people's attitude that it was the center of the world. This is the source of the commonly used Korean name for China, 중국. The name of the state currently occupying its territory is the People's Republic of China. China has a long history of civilization, and indeed the culture nurtured by the waters of the Yellow River was one of the earliest to arise as a civilization. The 2008 Summer Olympic Games will take place in Beijing, and contemporary China will take the stage.

[edit] Economics
With the ascension of Deng Xiaoping to the leadership in the 1970s, the PRC began a drastic marketization of its economy, particularly relying on foreign investment in special cities designated for that purpose. China currently has one of the largest absolute economies in the world, and it poised to soon overtake Japan. It has maintained an unheard of yearly GDP growth rate in the double digits for decades on end, yet this growth is manifested mainly in the developed coastal provinces and cities. This has led to much income inequality.
