Chodang University is the only university in Muan, a largely rural district of Jeollanam-do. The current president is Roh Jin-yeong (노진영). In 2003, the entering class numbered 1,660, and the graduating class 770. Its undergraduate offerings of Chodang University are arranged in three divisions: Humanities and Social Science, Nature and Engineering (which includes nursing and computer science), and Arts (which includes design and music theory). In addition, diverse graduate courses of study are offered by departments such as Social Welfare, Administration, Civil Engineering, and Nursing.

The school was founded as Chodang Business University (초당산업대학교) in 1994, taking on the present name in 1998. It was founded by the Chodang Educational Foundation, which was established in 1979 and opened Baekje Girl's Business High School in 1980. At the time of its establishment, the university had a maximum intake of 700 students. This number rose rapidly over the ensuing years, peaking at more than 2,000 in 1998.

The university enjoys international sisterhood and exchange relationships with Griffith College in Australia, Indiana State University and Hawaii Pacific University in America, Aaren University in Germany, and Yantai Normal University and Chenyang Industrial College in China.
