Chonnam National University is located in the metropolitan city of Gwangju, which lies in the middle of Jeollanam-do, or Jeonnam-do, for which the school is named. The school opened, as a university with five colleges, in 1952; the graduate school opened in the same year. In 1980, protests against its closing helped spark the Gwangju Massacre.
In 2003, the university carried an undergraduate enrollment of 18,397, and a graduate enrollment of 3,372, taught by about 800 professors. The current president is Kang Jung-chae (강정채).

Undergraduate offerings are divided among 15 departments: Business Administration, Engineering, Agriculture & Life Sciences, Law, Education, Social Sciences, Human Ecology, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Arts, Medicine, Humanities, Natural Sciences, Dentistry, and the Division of General Studies. Of these, Engineering is by far the most popular, with more than 4,000 enrolled.
Postgraduate offerings are divided between the General Graduate School and five specialized schools offering master's-level degrees.
