Foothills around Choryebong
Foothills around Choryebong

Choryebong (초례봉) is the most southerly peak along the Hwansang mountain range in Gyeongsangbuk-do. Choryebong may not be perceived as much of a mountain compared to its nearby sister Palgongsan, but might be best considered to be a large foothill. Its summit is 636 meters above sea level.

[edit] History

This was the last hiding place of King Taejo Wanggeon who sought refuge from the Gongsan Battle.

[edit] Hiking

Many climbing and hiking enthusiasts visit the base of Choryebong every weekend to begin a trek of several hours along this part of the range. However, Choryebong itself can be reached after an hour of hiking from the base.

There are numerous approaches to begin the hike. Many Koreans walk to the nearby E-mart in between Gaksan and Ansim Station and walk north along the road in behind the store. Eventually, you'll get to an overpass and you'll need to go under and proceed north to the foothills. Another approach is going north from Ansim Station and going under the overpass until you reach Chilbosa. Further up this road, you can find a way to reach Choryebong, but the climb might be a bit steeper than the approach from E-mart.
