This is by far not a comprehensive list, but it contains a number of common phrases that visitors to Korea are likely to hear and use.
Greetings and Farewells
- 안녕하세요?/안녕하십니까? - Hello/How are you? Lit: "Are you in peace?" Proper response is: "네/예, 안녕하세요?" (Yes, how are you?)
- 안녕히가세요/안녕히가십시오 - Good bye (said to the person who is leaving). Lit: "Go in peace."
- 안녕히계세요/안녕히계십시오 - Good bye (said to the person who is staying). Lit: "Stay in peace."
- 오래간만 입니다. - It's been a while/We haven't seen each other for some time.
- 처음 뵙겠습니다. - How do you do? Lit: It's the first time that we've met.
- 인사 하세요. - Introduce yourselves/greet each other. (Said when introducing two acquaintances.)
- 이름은 무엇 입니까? - What is your name?
- 성함이 어떻게 되세요? -What is your name? (honorific)
- 저는 [...] 입니다. - I am [...].
- 여보세요? - Hello? (Said when answering the phone)
- 요즘 어떻게 지내세요? -How are you doing these days?
- 반갑습니다. -Pleased to meet you.
- 천만에요 - You're welcome. Lit: It's nothing. In practice, Koreans don't often say this; instead, a common response to 감사합니다 is often 네/예 ("yes"), accompanied by a light nod of the head and slightly lowered eyes.
- 미안합니다/죄송합니다 - I'm sorry/excuse me. 죄송합니다 can also be used when approaching someone (especially a stranger) to ask something (such as directions).
- 실례합니다 - Excuse me. Lit: It was rude of me/I committed a rudeness.
Basic Questions and Answers
- 알겠습니까? - Do you understand?
- 모르겠습니다. - I don't understand.
- 질문 있습니까? - Do you have any questions?
- 질문 없습니다. - I have no questions.
- 영어/한국어 압니까? - Do you know English/Korean?
- 한국어 잘 못합니다. - I don't speak Korean well.
- 영어로 말하세요. - Please speak in English.
- 천천히 말하세요. - Please speak slowly.
- 어떻게 합니까?? - How is it done?
- 언제 했습니까? - When was it done?
- 값이 얼마예요? - How much is it/What is the price?
- 이촌오백원 입니다. - It's two thousand, five hundred won.
- 아주 쌉니다. - It's very cheap/inexpensive.
- 너무 비쌉니다. - It's too expensive.
- 오늘은 며칠입니까? - What is today's date?
- 오늘은 일월 일일입니다. - Today is January first.
- 오늘은 무슨 요일 입니까? - What day of the week is it today?
- 오늘 은 월/화/수/목/금/토/일요일 입니다. - Today is Mon/Tues/Weds/Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sunday.
- 지금 몇시입니까? - What time is it now?
- 지금 한시입니다. - It's one o'clock now.
- 어디에서 왔습니다? - Where do you come from?
- [나라]에서 왔습니다. - I come from [nation].
- 나이가 어떻게 되십니까? - How old are you? Lit: How many years are you?
Holidays and Special Occasions
- 생일 축하합니다! - Happy birthday!
- 주석 잘 보내세요! - Happy Juseok! (Korean harvest festival)
- 설날 잘 보내세요! - Happy Lunar New Year!
- 성탄절을 축하합니다/메리 크리스마스! - Merry Christmas!
- 새해 복 많이 받으세요. - Happy (Solar) New Year.
Restaurant Expressions
- 여기 앉으십시오. - Please sit here.
- 두분 입니다. - There are two of us.
- 여기요/저기요! - Over here/over there! (Called out to catch the waitress/waiter's attention.)
- 매운 음식이 괜찮습니다. - Spicy food is fine for me.
- 비빔밥 하나 주세요. - Give me one bibimbap, please.
- 소주/맥주 한병 주세요. - Give me one bottle of soju/beer, please.
- 젓가락/숟가락/포그/나이프 주세요. - Please give me chopsticks/spoon/fork/knife.
- 물 한병 더 주세요. - Another bottle of water, please.
- 맛이 있습니다. - It's tasty/delicious. Lit: It has taste.
- 맛이 없습니다. - It tastes bad. Lit: It has no taste.
- 이차로 갑시다! - Let's go have a drink/Let's go out for another round! Lit: Let's go to the second stop (a bar). 삼차, the third stop, is often at a 노래방-- a Korean karaoke room.
Friendship and Romance
- 시간이 있으면 데이트해 주세요. - If you have time, please have a date with me.
- 오후 일곱시에 만납시다. - Let's meet at seven o'clock.
- 이것은 내 전화번호 입니다. - This is my phone number.
- 나한테 전화하세요. - Please call me.
- 식당/다방에 갑시다. - Let's go to a restaurant/cafe.
- 한식/양식을 좋습니까? - Do you like Korean/Western food?
- 영화를 봅시다. - Let's see a movie.
- 어떤 영화/음식이 제일 좋습니까? - What kind of movie/food is your favorite?
- 희극/공포/스릴러/로맨스 영화가 제일 좋습니다. - Comedy/horror/thriller/romance movies are my favorite.
- 무슨 취미가 있습니까? - What hobbies do you have?
- 내 취미는 영화/음악/운동/읽기/공부하기 입니다. - My hobby is movies/music/sports/reading/studying.
- 오늘은 재미있었습니다. - Today was fun.
- 언제 우리가 다시 만날 수 있습니까? - When can we meet again?
