Daebu-do is the largest island in the Yellow Sea, within the municipal borders of Ansan city, Gyeonggi-do. During the Joseon Dynasty and up to 1914, Daebu Island was included in the old jurisdiction of Namyang County. In 1914 it was transferred to Bucheon, and in 1973 to Ongjin-gun (which later became part of Incheon metropolitan city). In 1994 the island was moved into the jurisdiction of Ansan. It has a population of 6,244 people (2001) and an area of 40.34 km². The predominant industries are tourism and fishing. The island is connected by road to the mainland on the north (Oido in Siheung ) and again to Hwaseong in the south.
Bus 123 runs from Ansan Station and Shihwa E-mart approximately every 40 minutes. Bus 790 runs from downtown Incheon to Daebu-do, and on to Yeongheung-do.
The island is also connected by bridge to Yeongheung-do in Ongjin. A car ferry service sails to destinations in Ongjin once daily, departing roughly at 9am. Journeys to Jawol-do take approximately 1 hour, Deokjeok-do 2 hours. More services are available at peak times.
The highest point on the island is Hwanggeumsan (황금산) at 168 metres. The average temperature in January is -4℃, and in July 24℃. Yearly rainfall is 1,210mm.
Today the island is home to the Ansan English village, an immersion village for students from Gyeonggi-do.
