Damyang, or Damyang-gun (담양군, ) is one of 17 counties in Jeollanam-do. It is comprised of one eup and 11 myeon and as of 2004 it has a population of 51,081. It is located north of Gwangju city and Hwasun county. To the east is the county of Gokseong, to the west is the county of Jangseong, and to the north is the county of Sunchang in phone number lookup the province of Jeollabuk-do. The county is located away from the sea and lacks its moderating influence, though it is still located in the south of the country and the winter is certainly not as harsh. The average yearly temperature is 12.5℃, the average temperature in January is -1.5℃, and the average temperature in August is 26.5℃. The average amount of precipitation over the year is 1,290 mm.

Damyang is best-known for its bamboo forests, most notable those at the Bamboo Theme Park. There are also several large mountains in the county, such as Mudeungsan, Byeongpungsan, and Chuwolsan.

History

Geography and administration

The county is longer from north to south than it is from east to west, and on the north side the mountains are higher. The name of the mountain range in the county is the Noryeong Mountains and some of the mountains there include Chuwolsan (추월산, 731m), Sanseongsan (산성산, 573m), Gwangdeoksan (광덕산, 584m), Byeongpungsan (병풍산, 822m), Guksubong (국수봉, 558m), and Mudeungsan (무등산, 1,187m).

Recreation

The most notable place in the county is the Bamboo Theme Park, a dense bamboo forest over 99,000 square meters in size. Many movies and television shows have filmed scenes here, and placards point out these spots as guests walk along the many paths.

The most popular mountains are Chuwolsan, Byeongpungsan, and Mudeungsan, which Damyang shares with neighboring Gwangju city. And although relatively far from the bus terminal in Damyang-eup, visitors might be interested in Soswaewon, a large private garden built in the 16th century and known for the large mud and stone wall that surrounds it, as well as for the numerous plant species on site.

Another attractive feature is the county's proximity to Gwangju, allowing for convenient access to shopping centers and other recreational activities. Because of Damyang's size, trips to Gwangju are often necessary for travellers wishing to go to and from the county.

Transportation

Damyang is served by a tiny bus terminal. As a result, those wishing to travel to and from Damyang will most likely have to first arrive at Gwangju and transfer.
