Traditionally, Koreans lived in villages and had as many as 3 or 4 generations living in the same house. Confucian teachings are dominant throughout the history of Korea, and living and caring with elders is considered a high form of respect and filial piety (hyo 효). This living arrangement also made life more efficient for collective labor purposes, especially in an agricultural society.
Industrialization and urbanization has deteriorated the grip that Confucian thought has held on Korean society and the intertwining of family and relationships, but the core roots are still there. As a foreigner living in Korea and having close relationships with Koreans or even marriage, you will see the depth of how much this society remains tied to Confucian thought throughout the centuries.
Now families usually live apart, especially in the major cities.
