Street near Gaksan Station
Gaksan Station (각산역, 角山驛, horn.mountain.station) is a station on line 1 of the Daegu subway. It is next to Banyawol and Anshim Station.
The area around Gaksan Station is economically booming and, along with the Ansim area, is often considered to be a 'new town', by Koreans, referencing a new, popular satellite community around a larger metropolitan center. As a result, there are loads of apartment buildings being built, as well as you can see many amenities popping up, notably hagwons, budongsans, and restaurants.
For shopping, there is a sprawling E-mart by the station, as well as The Block, a fashion mall with many brand name outlets, has recently opened up next to E-mart. There are some great streets lined with Korean restaurants, however, the western cuisine is slowly making its way in. There is a Lotteria, Baskin Robbins, Pizza Hut and various fried chicken and pizza take-out/delivery establishments in the area. Starbucks is not on the scene as of yet, but a Sleepless in Seattle coffee shop has opened up near The Block and E-mart.
For travel and sight-seeing, the area doesn't have much to offer, however, many Koreans like to follow the road behind E-mart to climb nearby Choryebong.
[edit] History
The area around Gaksan Station was originally called 'Sobangu', 'Sobau'(cattle horn-shaped rock), or 'Uamdong', because there was a big horn-shaped rock in the area. In 1907, the area was officially renamed to "Gaksan-dong" (horn mountain village).
