Galbijim:Galbijim/Goguksosik book project |
Bold text:Feel free to edit this page. If you wish to contribute you may add your name as well. Discussion is to be held on the talk page however, and only after a consensus has been reached will aspects of the project be changed.
[edit] Introduction
The Galbijim/Goguksosik book project is a project to create a book written in English (with a possible Korean translation later on) documenting the experiences and views of foreigners in the country. Writers are to be compensated, though the amount has yet to be decided.
[edit] Composition
The book is tentatively to be composed of 40 parts:
- 20 aspects of the country - of a varied nature based on individual experiences possibly such as Life on Baengnyeong-do, Stray cats in Korea, Culinary culture of Jeonju, etc. These titles are merely suggestions, and specific titles have yet to be decided.
- 20 parts of the country to be featured. This could include cities, towns, myeons, eups, and so on. The book will not attempt to be a comprehensive overview of all the parts of the country, but at least one location from every province should be featured.
- To accommodate those that don't know what to write or don't want to write extensively, we'll probably have snapshot paragraghs sprinkled through the book, written by expats. Those don't necessarily require a picture, per se. Maybe just talk about an interesting experience in Korea or something funny that happened to you once, that's Korean-centric and would be hard-pressed to find elsewhere, etc...We can take 100s of those, if need be.
- It would be good form for the writer to talk a little about themselves as for what they do in Korea and maybe what they did before coming here. This could help to dispel the media stereotype that expats, namely teachers, come here because they can't get decent jobs back home. There are many of us here where that's not the case and had good careers back home, but left for the spirit of adventure, travel, personal growth, etc and eventually just fell in love with certain parts of Korea and opted to stay longer. If you don't fit the media stereotype, then we hope you'll agree that it's important for brief, sincere mentions of your history to get worked into your submissions to help fend off those unwanted assumptions.
The book itself should not be of an overly positive or negative nature. Arirang-esque articles that seem too promotional turn many readers off, and controversial subjects would likely not be welcome. A good rule of thumb as a possible contributor may be to avoid "this is what's really good about Korea" and "this is what's really bad about Korea" and instead focus on "this is what I know well about Korea", leaving the interpretation to the reader.
[edit] Length of submission
Many are asking about word counts and length. This is discretionary. Anything from a paragraph to a few pages is fine. Worst case scenario, we collaborate with you on condensing.
[edit] Photographer submissions
The bulk of the submissions look like they are going to photograph entries, which is great. In these cases, we'd like to work with the submitters on choosing a sampling of their work and we'd then like for them to write a blurb or small story about the pic(s). And as this is a book about expats living or have lived or travelled in Korea, its important that there is at least one shot of the submitter somewhere in one of the pics, so it at least looks to be the work of an expat and not us ripping it off from a Korean's gallery and adding english content to it......
[edit] Deadline
First drafts tentatively set for Oct.1. We should emphasize the tentativeness of this. We're basically using the week of Sept.4-8 to finish the exploring for contributors and will spend the weeks from Sept.11-30 collaborating with contributors on their submissions. (Note: This is not to suggest that late submitters will not be allowed)
[edit] Outstanding questions
- Title - yet to be decided
- Editing - how will this be performed? User:Mithridates would prefer the editing be done by all contributors who have committed themselves to the project, possibly in a password-protected chat forum like http://www.chatzy.com.
- Will the contributors be varied enough? How to get contributors from the US Army, European citizens living and working in jobs other than English teaching? Should authour diversity be paramount or should contributors be decided on ideas and location alone? (Note: if the book is successful there could be others, making this less of an issue)

[edit] Discussion on content that should and shouldn't be included
- Note: this section is for opinions on what type of content should and shouldn't be included. In this section no one's opinion is more valid than anothers, and it should be taken as a pulse of the community and nothing more (for the moment). Please write your opinion below if you wish, or add responses to opinions written by others. The goal of this discussion is to come to a consensus on what should be written by next week (September 8th or so) so that we can avoid receiving inappropriate submissions that were written due to a misconception on what kind of content the book will need.'abc'
- Comment: Content that I don't believe we need in the book would be anything subjective or non-permanent. Here I'm thinking of Chicken Soup For the Soul-type stories that may give a certain impression of the country as a whole but only based on one story or limited experience. I would prefer the book not have individual stories such as the time a person got a free bike, when the authour realized he/she really liked Korea, or something similar. On the other hand I think personal experiences over a longer term would be really good. Maybe the changes a town went through over the three years the authour spent there, experiences running a shop or building one's own house, something that involves more than one event and that hopefully can be tied into a larger theme such as running a business here, changes in small cities (maybe life in the ciy before and after the arrival of Starbucks and other coffee shops), etc. mithridates aka 데이빛 12:16, 3 September 2006 (CEST)
