The Gangjin Confucian Academy is located in at the foot of Boeunsan mountain in Dongseong-ri, Gangjin-eup, Gangjin county, Jeollanam-do, and is designated as Local Tangible Cultural Property no. 115. It dates to the Joseon Dynasty, although the exact date of its foundation is unknown [1]. Records indicate that it was destroyed in the 16th century and that parts were reconstructed in the 17th century. Newer structures were built in the 21st century.
[edit] Namgangsa
The small temple Namgangsa is located 200 meters from the academy. It is notable for containing a set of wooden plates found in the 19th century, which have remained on site, and which were named Local Tangible Cultural Property no. 154 in 1987.
[edit] Getting There
The site is relatively remote, although it is within walking distance of Gangjin-eup. If exiting the bus terminal, make a left, cross through the rotary, and walk two blocks until reaching the "T" intersection. Take a right and walk for approximately 10 minutes. From there a sign pointing to 강진향교 can be found, and the academy can be seen on the left across the fields. Walk along the paved road and make another left at the next 강진향교 sign. Pedestrians will pass Namgangsa first, on the right, with a small sign indicating its significance.
