Gangneung (강릉시, 江陵市, river.hill.city) is a city in Gangwon-do. The population as of 2004 was 228,325, including:

Gangneung is a popular city to live in along with Donghae for those who enjoy the ocean. The Sea of Japan/East Sea is connected to the Pacific Ocean, and is much deeper than the sea on the west, the Yellow Sea or West Sea. Gangneung is further north than Donghae by about 40 km or so but has twice the population. It is also the economic centre of the Yeongdong region of eastern Gangwon-do.

To the north of the city is the county of Yangyang, to the west are the counties of Hongcheon, Pyeongchang and Jeongseon, to the south is the city of Donghae, and to the east is the sea.
Gangneung is warmer than cities on the western sea at the same latitude due to the Taebaek Mountains that block the wind. There is little rain in the summer, but more in the autumn. The average yearly temperature is 12.1℃, the average in January is －1.0℃, and the average in August is 24.3℃, with a yearly average precipitation of 1,282mm.

The flag of the city shows a red sun in the centre and blue wave in front, on a white background. The sun represents the sunrise, the wave the sea. The flower of the city is the crepe myrtle (백일홍), the tree of the city is the pine tree (소나무), its bird the swan (백조). The animal of Gangneung is the tiger (호랑이).
