Gatbawi (Daegu)

Gatbawi is 4 meter high stone statue of Buddha, which was carved out of the mountain top at Gwanbong Peak at the east end of the Palgongsan mountain range, in northern Daegu. The Buddha sports a stone hat, which is where the name Gatbawi is derived from.

An old folk tale states that the Buddha will hear and answer at least one of your prayers. As a result, Koreans from all over the country make the 1 hr climb to the peak to pray to the Buddha, particularly on weekends and holidays. When high school students are taking the college entrance examinations in the fall, thousands of mothers and other family members can be seen making the trek to pray for their child's success. Likewise, on New Year's Day of the lunar calendar, Koreans watch the first sunrise from Gatbawi and pray for good luck in the coming year.

[edit] Directions

Taking bus number 104 from Dongdaegu Station will eventually lead you to the village at the base of the climb leading to Gatbawi.
