To the north the Nakdong River makes the border with the cities of Miryang and Yangsan, to the east after crossing the river is the city of Busan, to the south as well is Busan as well as Jinhae, and to the east it borders the city of Changwon.

Mountains near the city include Yongjibong (용지봉, 龍池峰:750m), Bulmosan (불모산, 佛母山:802m), Hwasan (화산, 花山:792m), Gulamsan (굴암산, 屈岩山:651m) and others to the south, Mucheoksan (무척산, 無隻山:700m) and Seongnyongsan (석룡산, 石龍山:417m) to the north, and Shineosan (신어산, 神魚山:630m) and Dobongsan (도봉산, 棹棒山) to the east.

The Nakdong River flows towards the south, with the tributaries the Joman River and Haebancheon flowing into it. The Hwapocheon from Yongjibong in the west also flows into the Nakdong River.

Not only does Gimhae border the southern part of the Korean Peninsula but the mountains to the north serve to block the strong northern wind, and along with the effects of the South Sea and the Nakdong River the climate is a moderate one.
