Gwanak-gu (관악구) is a district of Seoul along its southern border. Gwanak is known for its abundance of nature and is often
visited on the weekend as a short getaway.
Gwanaksan (관악산), for which the district is named, is a massive mountain that forms the border with Anyang to the south. Gwanaksan is a casual day-hiker's paradise with light to moderate trails criss-crossing the mountain, and leading to wonderful views. With a peak at 629m --about twice as high as the observation deck on Seoul Tower-- on a clear day you can watch planes circle and land in Incheon on the Yellow Sea from only half-way up. A hike to the peak takes 2-5 hours depending on skill and which path you take. The name "Gwanak" refers to the stone column at the peak which looks like a yangban's top hat (갓).
Seoul National University, the most prestigious university in the
country, is nestled in at the foot of Gwanaksan in Shillim-dong. For students of the university and dwellers nearby, Nokdu Alley is a casual hang-out place.
Boramae Park is a well-known park in the area, and often visited
for its cherry blossoms in the spring and red leaves in the autumn.
