The Gwangju Metropolitan Subway was opened in 2004 in the city of Gwangju, Jeollanam-do. It is the newest subway in the country after the one in Daejeon, which commenced in March 2006. The subway station in Gwangju is still rather small and has only 14 stations, but an extension to line 1 as well as two more lines are planned.
