Haenam-eup is the county seat of Haenam county, Jeollanam-do. As of 2001, it has a population of 27,338. It is the seventh most populous area in Jeollanam-do, behind the five cities and Hwasun-eup in Hwasun county. The skyline is dominated by new, large apartment buildings, and there are dozens of fashion boutiques and a large 5-day market.
[edit] Recreation

From Haenam bus terminal, popular destinations include Wando and Jindo islands and 땅끝, or "Land's Edge," the southernmost point on the Korean peninsula. Daeheungsa temple and Duryunsan Provincial Park are short trips away. Outside of the bus terminal is a map, in Korean, with recommended courses for one- or two-day Haenam tours.
Haenam-eup itself is surrounded by mountains, providing for convenient and doable hiking trails. The closest mountain is Geumgangsan (481 meters), and there is a trail that leads first to Miam Exercise Park, and then to two different peaks. To get there, walk to the Haenam Assembly Plaza, and follow the road that runs uphill toward the apartment buildings to the left. At the top of the hill and end of the street, there is a large sign for Haenam Buddhist College (해남불교대학) and a smaller sign pointing to Geumgangsan. Follow the path to the right, climb the long staircase, and arrive at the exercise park. Behind the small park are trails that extend up the mountain.
Two kilometers from the bus terminal is Haenam Gymnasium (해남실내체육관), which has a large outdoor track and soccer field, as well as indoor exercise facilities.

On days ending in "1" or "6," there is a huge market in Haenam-eup that spans a sizable chunk of the city. Alleys and streets are filled with vendors selling produce, seafood (including squid, octopus, crabs, and shark), poultry and other meats, clothing, household products, snacks, and other items. To get there, walk toward Haenam Assembly Plaza and cross the bridges on the left. Or, follow the line of tents across the stream. On weekends, the market is at it's most lively in mid-afternoon.
[edit] National Pension Office
There is a branch of the National Pension Office in Haenam-eup. It is located in the Sanrimjohap (산림조합) Building, on the 3rd floor. To get there, exit the bus terminal and walk 300 meters in the direction of Wando. The office is in a 3-story white building on the left.
