Haeundae Beach is the most popular beach in Korea and is located in Haeundae-gu, Busan. During the summer months it is extremely busy and it can be a task simply to find a place to lie down. Admission is free.
The area is also famous for its hot springs. Around nearby Haeundae-gu Office, a 1.4 million square meter area has been designated as a hot springs area and is home to about 20 hot springs.
History
The beach and surrounding area is rumored to be named after a scholar from the Silla Dynasty, Choi Chiwon, whose pen name has 'Haeun'. The famous Confucian scholar was so enamored by the beauty of the area, that he inscribed his pen name on a large rock on a nearby island Dongbaekseom, thus giving rise to the current name.
