Hampyeong (함평군) is a county in Jeollanam-do. The population as of 2004 was 40,486, including:

  • 40,205 Koreans and
  • 281 non-Koreans.

Hampyeong is located at 126°22′∼126°40′ East, and 34°48′∼35°14′ North, and is 26 km from east to west and 29 km from north to south. It borders the cities of Naju and Gwangju to the east, the county of Muan to the south, the counties of Yeonggwang and Jangseong to the north, and the Hampyeong Bay to the west.

The Noryeong Mountains reach into the county, and the mountains are low in height. Some of the mountains include Wolaksan (월악산, 164m), Eosusan (어수산, 130m), Gujeolbong (구절봉, 280m), Guksasan (국사봉, 170m), Bulgapsan (불갑산, 516m), Cheonjubong (천주봉, 377m), Cheolseongsan (철성산 ,262m), Sokgeumsan (속금산, 171m), Gunyusan (군유산, 403.7m), Balbongsan (발봉산, 179m), Gonbongsan (곤봉산, 190.4m), and Gamaksan (감악산, 257m).

As the county is located right next to the sea it has a moderate climate, and as it is not too mountainous it does not receive quite as much rain as some of the counties further to the east do. The average yearly temperature is 12.7℃, the average in January is -0.1℃, the average in August is 25.5℃, and the average precipitation per year is 1,277.8 mm.

Recreation

The most noteworthy site in Hampyeong is the Hampyeong Butterfly Festival, held each May. Visitors will see tens of thousands of butterflies as well as various exhibits and performances during the festival. Other notable festivals in the county include the Scarecrows and Totem Poles Festival and the Orchid Festival.
Hampyeong has a small coastline facing the Yellow Sea, therefore giving the county a few beaches, such as Anak Beach and Dolmeo-ri beach.
Visitors may also be interested in seeing temples. The most famous one in the county is Yongcheonsa, which has an amaryllis flower festival each September.
