Heungguksa (Yeosu)

Heungguksa (흥국사) is a Buddhist temple in Yeosu city, Jeollanam-do. Originally founded in 1195, Heungguksa is perhaps best known for being the training ground for 300 monks-cum-soldiers during the Japanese Invasion of the 16th century.

Heungguksa is also known for its azaleas, which book in early April. The annual Yeongchwisan Azalea Festival takes place nearby.

[edit] Name confusion

There is also a Heungguksa temple in Goyang city, Gyeonggi-do, at which visitors can participate in a temple stay program.

[edit] Getting There

Take bus 52 from Yeosu Bus Terminal and get off at Heungguksa.
