Hoengseong (횡성군, , side.castle.county) is a county in Gangwon-do. The population as of 2004 was 44,557, including:

  • 44,297 Koreans and
  • 260 non-Koreans.

To the north is the county of Hongcheon, to the west is the county of Yangpyeong in Gyeonggi-do, to the south is the city of Wonju and the county of Yeongwol, and to the east is the county of Pyeongchang.

There are a number of large mountains in the region, such as Balgyosan (발교산, 髮校山:998m) to the north, Taegisan (태기산, 泰岐山:1,261m), Cheongtaesan (청태산, 靑太山:1,200m) and Sajasan (사자산, 獅子山:1,120m) to the east, and Chiaksan (치악산, 雉岳山:1,288m) and Namdaebong (남대봉, 南臺峰:1,182m) to the south.

Hoengseong is located far from the sea and thus has a more extreme climate than most parts of the country. The average yearly temperature is 10.7℃, the average in January is -6.3℃, and the average in August is 25.5℃. The average yearly precipitation is 1,140mm.
