Ieo-do

Ieodo ( 이어도) is a reef located 149 kms. SW of Marado, South Korea’s nearest land, and 245 kms. from the nearest Chinese island of Tongdao. The reef is 4.6 meters below the level of the sea. Between 1995 and 2001 Korea’s Ocean Research and Development Institute built the Ieodo Ocean Research Station on it, three storeys with a helipad. China questions Korea’s ownership of the reef. This shallow spot is also known as Suyan Rock (苏岩礁) or Socotra Rock. The Korean island furthest to the south without a territorial disupte is Mara-do.
