Founded at the end of the 2003 season in the Korean port city of Incheon, Incheon United made their K-League debut in 2004 under the leadership of German manager Werner Lorant.

Midway through the season, Lorant quit and the side struggled to make an impact in the league.

Under new coach Jang Woe-ryong Incheon enjoyed remarkable success in 2005, reaching the championship finals where they lost out 6-3 on aggregate to Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i.
