The "Jangdan bean" village in Paju, Gyeonggi-do is known to produce the highest quality beans for making dubu. The average temperature of the village is 4 degrees lower than that of Seoul, and the fertile soil makes Jangdan beans taste savory and chewy.
Bean farming in the village had declined after the Korean War, with the advent of industrialization. However, the recent "well-being" craze has contributed to a revival of Jangdan bean farming. The high demand for these regional beans makes them far more profitable than any comparable crop.
Visitors to the village can participate in the hands-on program offered to teach you how to make your own dubu. Also, if you want to purchase discounted Jangdan beans, you can do so at the Jangdan Bean Festival that is held every winter.
