[edit] Society
Along with it's eastern neighbouring counties, Muju and Jinan, the Korean acronym, "Mujinjang" refers to this mostly rural area of Jeollabuk-do.
As Jangsu is located in a very rural part of the country, it has a large number of international marriages due to the lack of marriageable women in the county for men who live and work there. In 2005 for example, 150 couples were married, out of which 44 (one third) were international marriages. The majority of these are between Korean men and Southeast Asian women.
The Korean saying, "To receive a Jangsu apple box" while in no way reflecting on the integrity or probity of the people of Jangsu, is analogous to sayings like, "To receive a brown paper bag" or "He got money under the table" i.e. to receive a bribe. Jangsu apple boxes contain several layers, the bottom most of which can been used to hide bank notes while, to onlookers, it appears that a mere gift of a box of apples is taking place.
