Accommodation
Contrary to the Lonely Planet Korea guidebook, there are hotels near the train station, at least two of them. You'll see them if you are there.
There are several in the downtown area. Here are two: Donhojang, across from the taxi stand at the south end of the market. Comfortable rooms for 30,000 won/night as of 9/05. Daewangjang, a block and a half west of the bridge from the train station, on the north side of the street. Rooms for 25,000 won/night. There's another hotel just west of the bridge and yet another stuck in back of buildings to the north of the bridge road. One can see it from the bridge....

Other Points of Interest
- Five-day Market, Jeongseon. This may not be the best five-day market in Korea, but it is the best-known of that ilk. It occurs on days ending in 2 or 7; on those days an extra train is put on to bring visitors up from Seoul. The market winds along several streets in downtown Jeongseon. Traditional medicinals are particularly well-represented here.
- Hoedong-ni. Try the local tadpole jelly!? [1]
- Jeungsan. Who says Korean names all sound alike? This village is where the Jeongseon spur branches off the train between Taebaek and Jecheon. One may have to wait a while for the connection. There are a few restaurants in town but they aren't always open, even in the middle of the day. Still, you shouldn't starve here. Close to here is the hiking spot of Mindungsan.
- Rail-bike to Gujeol-ri. The tail end of the spur line going to Jeongseon and beyond has been retired from train use and redesignated as a bike trail. The rental railbikes leave from Auraji - which is now the end of the train line. Don't count on biking here in the winter, though...
