Jinhae Port was an important naval base of the Japanese Navy during the colonial period. Even today, the U.S. Seventh Fleet as well as the South Korean Navy maintain naval base in the port. The Korean naval academy is established in the city.

The city is primarily supported by the Korean Naval personnel and their families or people working for the Republic of Korea Navy shipyard and base facilities. There is a large chemical fertilizer plant, and a petrochemical plastics plant at the far end of the city. Jinhae is two hours from Seoul via air/ground transportation, and six hours by train. The city fronts on a sheltered, island-studded bay, and is almost completely surrounded by mountains covered with pine trees.

The main peaks in the city are Cheonjabong (천자봉, 天子峰:502m) and Jangboksan (장복산, 長福山:582m).

Other mountains nearby the city include Bobaesan (보배산, 479m) and Gulamsan (굴암산, 屈岩山:662m) to the east, and Bulmosan (불모산, 佛母山:802m) to the west.

Inside the Jinhae Bay are 26 islands, four of which are populated.

Due to the effects of the Tsushima Current (쓰시마해류) the climate is moderate, with a yearly average of 13℃, an average January temperature of 1.4℃, and an average July temperature of 25.1℃ with around 1,255mm of precipitation per year.
