죽 (juk)
Rice porridge. Rice is cooked a long time in a lot of water, until the grain breaks down and loses its form. Three common traditional types are pat-juk (made from rice and azuki beans and containing little rice dumplings known as saealshim), nokdu-juk (made from rice and mung beans), and hobak juk, made from rice and pumpkin it's a sweet porridge in contrast to the previous two. Some public markets have stalls selling this juk for 2000-3000 won per bowl.
Several chain restaurants have started up recently, serving, in addition to the traditional kinds, some modern varieties including: mixed seafood, beef, mushroom-oyster, vegetable, octopus-kimchi, and tuna. Most go between 5000 and 10,000 won but some can be as much as 20,000 won.
