A tunnel has been proposed by certain groups in both Korea and Japan to connect the cities of Busan and Fukuoka with an underground tunnel, with a stop in the island of Tsushima (or Daema-do in Korean), in the same manner in which England and France have an underground tunnel connecting the two countries. In Japanese it is known as the Nikkan Tonneru (日韓トンネル or Japan-Korea tunnel) and in Korean as the 한일 해저터널 (韓日海底터널 or Korea-Japan sea.bottom.tunnel).

The idea was actually proposed originally back in 1940 when Korea was under Japanese occupation, but was not brought up again until 1980. It has been given attention in both countries from time to time by KBS and other such stations, and mentioned in meetings between leaders such as in the 2003 meeting between the President Roh Mu-hyun and the Prime Minister of Japan until September 2006, Junichiro Koizumi.
