[edit] History

Korean Air Lines was formed and soley owned by The Korean Government in 1963. Six years later in 1969 it was bought and rebranded Korean Air by The Hanjin Group. By 1997 Korean Air was recognized as the second largest commercial airline cargo operation in the world. May 2002 saw Korean Air named the official carrier of that year's world cup jointly hosted by Korea and Japan

On September 11, 2001 Korean Air Flight 85, flying to New York via Anchorage, Alaska, was intercepted by U.S. and Canadian fighter jets and forced to land at Whitehorse International Airport. The action was taken due to fears that the plane might have been hijacked. Rather than being hijacked, the plane was simply low on fuel. However, witnesses reported that when the plane landed they saw RCMP order the crew out at gunpoint. The entire misunderstanding was caused by a malfunctioning transponder. Korean Air Wiki

In September 1983 Korean Air Flight 007 departed Anchorage bound for Korea. During the course of the flight the aircraft strayed into (then) Soviet airspace and was shot down by two MiG fighters. Offically there were 269 deaths (23 of 23 crew, 246 of 246 passengers) but there are theories that the plane managed to make an emergency landing and that survivors were imprisoned by the Soviet Union, Including US Senator Larry McDonald who was aboard.
