Korean Wave

Korean Wave (한류-Hallyu)

The Korean Wave references the recent surge in enthusiasm about Korean pop culture, among other Asian cultures. Arguably, the biggest catalyst for this fascination has been due to the export of Korean soap operas and Korean television programs, most notably Winter Sonata starring Bae Yong Jun and Choi Ji Woo.

Japan, China, and Taiwan have all become smitten by the Korean Wave and the reach of Korean soap operas has even stretched as far as SE Asian countries like Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Because of this 'discovery' of Korean pop culture by other Asian cultures, it has paved the way for export of Korean music, movies, and fashion, as well.
