A gyopo is a term for any Korean living abroad with non Korean Citizenship, which comes from the word 'haewae gyopo' (해외교포 海外僑胞), which signifies a person of the same genetic stock living abroad.
Gyopos in Korea who formerly had Republic of Korea citizenship, or whose forebears formerly had Republic of Korea citizenship, are able to obtain an F-4 visa, similar to some of the visas issued in European countries to people who are able to claim direct lineage. The F-4 visa gives a person nearly the same rights and responsibilities as a Korean citizen except voting and military duty, and the F-4 visa holder is able to work anywhere without fear of repercussion.
