The Lotus Lantern Festival (연등축제) is a street festival held annually in Insadong on the Sunday before Buddha's Birthday, which falls somewhere in the beginning of May. The festival includes an exhibition of traditional lanterns and a street parade. You can make your own beautiful and functional paper lanterns at booths along the main festival street, and cheaply buy the materials to make many more of your own at home. The enormous night-time parade of lanterns from Tapgol Park to Dongdaemun Stadium is the largest street parade in the country, comprising tens of thousands of lanterns and giant lit-up floats, including several dragons who belch real fire. The parade starts at 7pm.
